C9 Socket Wire Buying Guide: Spacing, SPT-1 Wire, Plugs and Brands

Socket wire is what separates a professional roofline from store-bought strands. You cut it to the exact length of each roof section, so there are no extra bulbs bunched at the end and no gaps. This guide covers spacing, the SPT-1 wire and plugs that power it, how to build a run, and how the brands compare.

1. What socket wire is (and why pros use it)

Socket wire is a long green SPT-1 wire with empty C9 (E17 base) sockets every 12 to 24 inches. You cut it to fit, add a plug on one end, cap the other, and screw in the bulbs you want.

  • Exact fit: every run matches its section of roofline.
  • Any color: swap bulbs to change colors or patterns without new wire.
  • Easy repairs: replace one bulb, not a whole strand.
  • Reusable: label each run by house and side, store it, and rehang it next year.

2. 12, 15, 18 or 24 inch spacing?

15 inch is the go-to for most homes. 12 inch looks fuller and brighter. 18 and 24 inch save bulbs on long commercial runs seen from a distance.

SpacingBulbs per 1,000 ftBest for
12 inch1,000High-end homes, entries, close-up viewing
15 inch800Most residential rooflines
18 inchabout 667Large homes, budget-friendly coverage
24 inch500Long commercial runs viewed from far away

Pick one spacing as your standard and stick with it. One spacing means one wire to stock and runs that work on any house.

3. Socket wire brands compared

All four are 1,000 ft spools of green SPT-1 wire with C9 sockets. The differences are spacing options, factory clips, and price.

4. With or without factory clips?

Some socket wire comes with a clip molded onto each socket. Factory clips help when you attach lights to tree limbs, siding or trim. On rooflines most installers use separate gutter and shingle clips anyway, so many skip the factory clip. It comes down to preference.

5. How to build a run: wire, plugs and end caps

Cut the socket wire to the section length, add a male plug on the power end, cap the far end, and use SPT-1 extension wire with male and female plugs to reach the outlet.

  1. Measure each section of the roofline and cut the socket wire to length, cutting midway between sockets.
  2. Add a male plug to the end that will face the power.
  3. Cap the far end with a clear end cap so water can’t get in.
  4. Make leads and jumpers from SPT-1 extension wire with male and female plugs, or join two pieces with a One Plug.
  5. Label the run with the customer and the side of the house.
  6. Bulb it and test it before it goes on the truck.

6. Wiring tips from the field

  • Cut one conductor a little longer than the other when you put wire into a plug or cap, and make sure no stray strands stick out past the insulation.
  • Use dielectric grease on connections within about a foot of the ground, where water collects.
  • Seal every cut end. An open end is the most common cause of tripped GFCIs in wet weather.
  • Know your load. LED C9 bulbs draw about 0.85 watts each. Stay within the wire, plug and circuit ratings, and follow local electrical code.
  • Stock one color of wire. Green SPT-1 blends into most gutters and trim.
