How Many Mini Lights to Wrap a Tree (Formula, Examples and Strand Guide)

Wrapped trees are one of the most impressive add-ons you can sell, and one of the easiest to underestimate. A trunk that looks like “a few strands” can take a dozen, and a big oak with wrapped limbs can take over a hundred. Here’s how to calculate mini lights for any tree, which strands to buy, and how to keep the job profitable.

1. The simple formula for wrapping a trunk

Feet of lights = trunk circumference (ft) × number of wraps. Number of wraps = height to wrap (inches) ÷ inches between wraps. Divide by strand length to get strands.

  1. Measure around the trunk at chest height, in feet.
  2. Measure how high you’ll wrap, in feet.
  3. Pick the spacing between wraps: 3 to 4 inches looks full and bright, 6 inches is lighter.
  4. Wraps = height in inches ÷ spacing. Feet of lights = wraps × circumference.
  5. Strands = feet of lights ÷ strand length (about 17 ft or 23.5 ft). Round up.

2. Examples: small, medium and large trees

4 ft around10 ft4 inch30 wraps × 4 = 120 ft6
6 ft around15 ft3 inch60 wraps × 6 = 360 ft16

Real trunks taper and aren’t perfectly round, so add about 10% and keep a few extra strands on the truck.

3. Wrapping branches and limbs

Use the same formula on each limb, then add them up. Limbs are where big trees go from 10 strands to 100.

  • Measure a typical limb’s circumference and the length you’ll wrap, then multiply by how many limbs are similar.
  • Decide with the customer how far out the wraps go. “Main limbs to 10 feet out” is a clear, quotable scope.
  • Large trees with wrapped trunks and major limbs can take 100 or more strands. Price the labor accordingly and consider a lift.

4. 50-count or 70-count strands?

Both are 5mm LED mini lights with 4 inch spacing. The 70-count is longer, so you make fewer connections on big trees. The 50-count is shorter and easier on small trees and bushes.

5. How many strands per outlet?

The 70-count strands use about 4.8 watts each and are listed to connect up to 45 strings end to end. Twenty strands is only about 96 watts.

  • Even a 100-strand tree is about 480 watts, but don’t connect them all end to end. Split them into several runs.
  • Stay within the strand’s connection limit and your circuit’s rating.
  • Use GFCI-protected outdoor outlets and keep connections off wet ground.

6. Pricing tree wraps so they pay

  • Count strands first, then price. Materials are easy to calculate with the formula above.
  • Labor is the real cost. Wrapping limbs tight takes far longer than a roofline of the same footage.
  • Price height into it: anything above ladder reach may need a lift, so include the rental.
  • Takedown still takes time, though usually less than install.

FAQ

How many lights do I need to wrap a tree trunk?

Feet of lights equals trunk circumference times the number of wraps, where wraps equals the wrapped height in inches divided by the spacing between wraps. Divide by strand length to get strands.

How many mini light strands for a 4 foot trunk?

Wrapping a 4 foot circumference trunk 10 feet high with 4 inch spacing takes about 120 feet of lights, or 6 strands of 70-count (23.5 ft) mini lights.

How far apart should tree wraps be?

3 to 4 inches between wraps looks full and bright. 6 inches gives a lighter look and uses fewer lights.

How many LED mini light strands can be connected together?

The 70-count 5mm LED strands are listed to connect up to 45 strings end to end at about 4.8 watts each. Always follow the manufacturer limit and split large trees into several runs.

Prices are listed wholesale prices as of October 2026 and can change. Always follow the manufacturer’s connection limits and local electrical code.
